CENOTE EXCURSION IN MEXICO: THE MOST BEAUTIFUL CENOTES TO VISIT IN 2026
Cenotes are unique natural pools formed by the collapse of limestone rock in the Yucatan Peninsula. Discover the most beautiful cenotes in Mexico and how to visit them with a French-speaking guide.
WHAT IS A CENOTE AND WHY VISIT THEM?
A cenote (from the Mayan 'dz'onot', sacred well) is a natural cavity filled with crystal-clear freshwater. There are over 6,000 in the Yucatan Peninsula, each with its unique character: open to the sky, semi-open bordered by tropical vegetation, or completely underground with millennial stalactite formations.
Cenotes were sacred to the Maya who considered them gateways to the underworld (Xibalba). Today they offer an incomparable swimming and diving experience, in waters at 24-26°C year-round with visibility that can exceed 100 meters.
BEST CENOTES FOR AN EXCURSION
For swimming and snorkeling, we recommend semi-open cenotes like Cenote Azul, Gran Cenote near Tulum, or Ik-Kil cenote next to Chichen Itza.
- Cenote Dos Ojos: two caves connected by a tunnel, ideal for diving and snorkeling
- Cenote Chac Mool: impressive stalactites and spectacular light effects
- Cenote The Pit: deep dive to 40 meters with a fascinating halocline cloud
- Cenote Zapote: Hell's Bells, geological formations unique in the world
- Cenote Angelita: underwater river at 28 meters depth, mystical experience
